Prototyping and pre-series production: validating the product before industrialisation

October 2026

Between design and series production, there is a crucial stage: the point at which a project takes shape and becomes a tangible product.
This is where prototyping goes beyond digital design. Producing a physical component makes it possible to assess its characteristics, functionality and potential issues, allowing modifications to be made before finalising the geometry and moving on to industrialisation.
That is why GIDI Meccanica offers a comprehensive functional and aesthetic prototyping service, complemented by the possibility of producing pilot tooling and pre-series runs.

Functional and aesthetic prototypes

Not every project requires the same type of validation.

  • Aesthetic prototypes (looks-like) make it possible to assess the product’s shape, dimensions, proportions, finishes and overall appearance.
  • Functional prototypes (works-like), on the other hand, allow the behaviour of a component or assembly to be analysed by checking fits, functionality and the interaction between different parts. In some cases, they can also be used to test mechanical properties.

In both cases, a prototype provides a tangible representation of the product and supports design decisions based on practical evaluation, allowing adjustments to be made where necessary before moving on to the next stages.

Different technologies to suit each project

The choice of technology depends on the component’s characteristics and the type of validation required. For this reason, we use a range of processes, from rapid prototyping to precision machining.

Our services include:

  • 3D printing, using LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) and PBF (Powder Bed Fusion) technologies;
  • turning;
  • CNC milling of plastic and metal from solid stock;
  • wire EDM (electrical discharge machining);
  • sinker EDM (die-sinking electrical discharge machining).

This range of technologies allows us to move from preliminary geometry validation to the production of more complex components that closely represent the final product, identifying the most suitable solution for each project’s requirements.

Pilot tooling and pre-series production

As a project approaches industrial production, the process can continue with the development of pilot tooling and pre-series runs.

Pre-series production makes it possible to validate not only the product itself, but also the process required to manufacture it. Factors such as productivity, repeatability, assembly times (for assemblies) and workflow organisation can be assessed, providing practical insights and a more accurate estimate of production times and costs before series production begins.

This stage also provides an opportunity to test innovative mould solutions and identify and resolve potential issues before manufacturing the final tooling. This helps reduce the risk of subsequent modifications, unexpected problems and additional costs, allowing industrialisation to proceed with validated solutions and greater certainty regarding the final outcome and its economic impact.

From concept to production

The aim of this service is to support customers throughout the stages leading up to industrial production, providing technologies and expertise tailored to each project’s specific requirements.

Because entering industrialisation with a thoroughly tested project means moving into production with greater confidence, fewer issues and a more robust process.
