The value of technical brainstorming in the design phase

May 2026

In the design of mechanical components, discussion between designers represents a fundamental step in transforming a technical requirement into a concrete, reliable and industrializable solution. At GIDI Meccanica, technical brainstorming is a structured phase of the design process, enabling each project to be analysed in a shared and multidisciplinary way. This exchange is based on consolidated technical expertise and a solid foundation of knowledge.

A key element of this phase is a neutral approach to the customer’s technical proposal. Initial specifications are assessed without preconceptions, analysing functional requirements, application constraints and potential critical issues, with the aim of identifying the most suitable solution in terms of performance, safety and manufacturing process. This method helps develop designers with an open and critical mindset, capable of questioning their own ideas to evaluate their actual robustness.

Brainstorming involves designers with complementary skills and experience and often starts from a hand-drawn scheme or an initial draft/sketch. From this exchange, the first design concepts and drawings emerge, translating technical reasoning into preliminary representations, while leaving room for new ideas and alternative approaches, that can later be explored, verified and developed in subsequent stages.
Alongside idea generation, discussion among designers also enables a preliminary risk assessment, identifying from the earliest stages potential critical issues related to stress, wear or operating conditions. This supports more informed design decisions and reduces the need for corrective actions in later stages.

The identified solutions are then progressively validated through technical analysis, simulations and testing, enabling component’s behaviour to be verified under real operating conditions and the design to be refined before the industrialization phase. Continuous collaboration between design, production and quality ensures the feasibility of the solutions and their full alignment with the required specifications.
Beyond technical aspects, brainstorming has also a positive impact on team engagement. The active involvement of designers encourages the sharing of responsibilities, stimulates critical thinking and strengthens a sense of ownership of the project, contributing to improved work quality and overall process efficiency.

In an ever-evolving industrial context, technical brainstorming is a structured process that enables us to develop reliable, shared and quality-oriented solutions, enhancing skills, experience and collaboration within the team.
